Grade 11 British Biology students Hala Alharbi and Anood Alhaysouni of Al Hussan International school, Riyadh won the Eco Innovation Award at the Science and Technology Competition held at AL Faisal University. Their project, Eutrophication Eradicator, focused on tackling eutrophication, an environmental issue caused by excess nutrients in water bodies leading to algal blooms and oxygen depletion.
The students designed a smart fertilizer machine that monitors and regulates fertilizer composition before it reaches water sources. By controlling nutrient levels and reducing runoff, their innovation aims to decrease the impact of fertilizers on aquatic ecosystems.
Hala and Anood’s project stood out for its practical approach to environmental protection, combining biological understanding with technological innovation. Their achievement highlights not only their scientific skills but also their commitment to sustainability and ecological responsibility.
