Orbit International school Girls’ Section Grade 4 students explored how fossils form and what they tell us about Earth’s history through a fun, hands-on activity. Using different colors of clay, they created layered “rock formations” and placed small objects like shells, leaves, and toy animals between the layers to represent fossils.
As they built each layer, the students observed how sediments gradually cover plants and animals over time, forming fossils deep within the Earth. By pressing the layers together and viewing them from the side, they were able to clearly see how each layer represents a different period in time, with older layers at the bottom and newer ones on top.
Through this activity, the students learned that fossils provide important evidence of past life and help scientists understand how landforms and environments have changed over time. It also helped them visualize how natural processes like sedimentation and pressure contribute to the formation of rock layers, making Earth’s history easier to understand in a creative and engaging way.
